The illustrations are consistently vibrant and playful. Thestory is fun to read aloud, but without the illustrations the audience would not be able to see the fortunes come about to such spectacular effect. The reader follows each member of her family to see how their fortunes are fulfilled. The main character, an anonymous young Chinese girl, believes that all the fortunes in the cookies will come true. The story starts with an experience familiar to many families opening the fortune cookies at the end of a meal at a Chinese restaurant. Grace Lin’s book, however, is one of those rare picture books in which the text and illustrations really depend on each other–and with charming results. This book is enjoyable to students with its vivid and engaging illustrations as well as the exposure to a potentially new concept.Well-written children’s books are a pleasure to read, but there are times when the stories would be fine without the pictures and vise versa. Providing students with this activity helps promote expanded vocabulary, and writing skills, along with using evidence from the text to support answers and making predictions. Also, by asking students first, the teacher can be sure that students understand what a fortune is, and will be doing the activity correctly. Because students are only in first or second grade, a sentence starter would be good to provide students such as "My fortune is." A word bank might also be a good idea, and the teacher could write a few words on the board, however, ask students for words they want to use, do not just provide them words so students do not copy each other, and students can still be creative with their fortunes. After writing, students could then share their fortunes by displaying their writing around the room, a few students could briefly explain their fortunes with the class. The teacher should explain to students what a fortune is, remind them of the fortunes read in the book students should understand that fortunes are positive, and encouraging messages, not negative, or unrealistic. Another activity to do would be to have students create their own fortunes, and then write about what that fortune would mean. An activity to do after reading the book could be to either have students choose a character and explain how their fortune matches them, and use evidence from the book to support their answer. After reading the story the students and teacher could talk about each characters' fortune, whether it came true or not, and if they think the fortune matches the character. The teacher could ask students to remember a character's fortune and think about if that fortune suits their character. Some explanation of vocabulary may be necessary as with the word "contagious" for example. While reading each characters' fortune the teacher could ask the students what they think that behavior means. As the teacher reads the story they could point out the pictures of fortune cookies. Before reading this book the teacher can introduce the term "fortune cookie" to students and have a quick mini discussion with the class, asking if students are familiar with this word, if they have ever seen one, and what is inside fortune cookies. The narrator appreciates the multiple fortunes she finds and reads, and believes that they will always come true.įortune Cookie Fortunes is at a second grade reading level so this book could be used in a read aloud in first or second grade. Her fortune says, "you see the world in a different way." She believes that she does, which is supported by the vivid and colorful illustrations in the book. The narrator's mother and sisters' fortunes come true as well, and the narrator wonders if her fortune is true. The following day the narrator sees multiple members of her family and it appears that their fortunes are coming true! For instance, BaBa's fortune said "your mood is contagious" and he begins to feel sleepy, as does the narrator and everyone surrounding them. Fortune Cookie Fortunes tells the story of a young girl whose family has opened fortune cookies and received fortunes the narrator wonders if the fortunes will come true.
